The world’s first artificial leaf ‘created’

Scientists have created the world’s first practical artificial leaf that can turn sunlight and water into energy, which they claim could pave the way for a cheaper source of power in developing countries like India.
A team at Massachusetts Institute of Technology says that the artificial leaf from silicon, electronics and various catalysts which spur chemical reactions within the device, can use sunlight to break water into hydrogen and oxygen which can then be used to create electricity in a separate fuel cell.
“A practical artificial leaf has been one of the Holy Grails of science for decades. We believe we have done it. And placed in a gallon of water and left in sun, these artificial leaves could provide a home in the developing world with basic electricity for a day,” Daniel Nocera, who led the team, said.

9,523 dead in Japan quake, 16,067 missing

Tokyo, March 24 (IANS) The toll in the Japan earthquake and ensuing tsunami has risen to 9,523 while 16,067 people are still unaccounted for, Xinhua quoted the National Police Agency as saying.

The toll is expected to climb significantly higher.
On Wednesday, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan told two prefectures near a troubled nuclear power plant to stop selling their vegetables and raw milk after authorities detected radioactive materials in the produce, DPA reported.

Authorities said they had found high levels of radiation in 11 types of produce, including cabbage and broccoli, grown in Fukushima prefecture, where a nuclear power station was damaged by the earthquake and tsunami.

Health ministry officials have detected radioactive caesium at levels of 82,000 becquerels, 164 times the legal limit, in kukitachina, a leafy vegetable, from the city of Motomiya, 60 km west of the nuclear power plant.

Go and watch the "Nearest MOON" right now.....

*Look for the biggest full moon in nearly two decades when it rises from the east at sunset today, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
*The last full moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993
*The full moon of March 19 occurs less than one hour away from perigee -- a near-perfect coincidence that happens only (every) 18 years or so...
*Although perigee brings the moon 31,000 miles closer to Earth than when the moon is its farthest point from the earth -- apogee -- it still will be 221,000 miles away on Saturday night, according toNASA.

India's First 3D Set-Top Box : Videocon d2h

Videocon d2h has launched the first set-top box with 3D functionality.
There is a catch, as there is only one channel that gives you 3D content. And that channel belongs to Videocon. They’ve not mentioned what kind of content will be made available on this channel, but I’m hoping its something worthwhile.

The tsunami that barreled into Japan on Friday was so murderous and efficient that not much was left when search-and-rescue teams finally reached Natori on Monday. There was searching, but not much rescuing. There was, essentially, nobody left to rescue.

The death toll from the quake, the strongest in Japan’s history, continued to climb, inexorably so, as officials uncovered more bodies.

By Monday afternoon, the toll stood at more than 1,800 confirmed dead and 2,300 missing. Police officials, however, said it was certain that more than 10,000 had died. A leading Japanese daily reported Monday that 20,000 people in two small coastal towns were missing ...

Alam Ara: The first Indian sound film

It was this day 80 Years back when Indian cinema achieved a landmark in filmmaking when director Ardeshir Irani made, Alam Ara, the first ever-Indian film with sound. The film also marked the beginning of filmy music in the Cinema.

Alam Ara was first screened at the Majestic Cinema in Bombay on March 14, 1931 the movie ran for two hours and four minutes, and used a Tanar Sound System to record the dialogues.

The film was shot mostly in the night to avoid capturing the noises of the day. Alam Ara was made using microphones that had to be hidden from the camera's range.

The amazing fact of a movie with dialogue that the audience could actually hear was advertised with the line 'All living. Breathing. 100 per cent talking.' The Hindi punchline was even more colorful: '78 murder insaan zinnia ho gaye. Unko bolte dekho.' (78 dead people come to life. Watch them speak.)

Millions in Japan without food or water

TAGAJO, Japan – The death toll in Japan's earthquake and tsunami will likely exceed 10,000 in one state alone, an official said Sunday, as millions of survivors were left without drinking water, electricity and proper food along the pulverized northeastern coast.

According to officials, at least 1,000 people were killed — including 200 people whose bodies were found Sunday along the coast — and 678 were missing in the disasters.

The U.S. Geological Survey calculated the initial quake to have a magnitude of 8.9, while Japanese officials raised their estimate on Sunday to 9.0. Either way it was the strongest quake ever recorded in Japan. It has been followed by hundreds of powerful aftershocks.

Police cars drove slowly through the town and warned residents through loudspeakers to seek higher ground

Dozens of countries have offered assistance. Two U.S. aircraft carrier groups were off Japan's coast and ready to provide assistance.
Two other U.S. rescue teams of 72 personnel each and rescue dogs were scheduled to arrive later Sunday, as was a five-dog team from Singapore

Every fifth person in the  National Capital is not getting purified drinking WATER, which is what the city's water utility, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) claims to supply, but a potentially deadly cocktail of disease-carrying germs, a survey by the municipal health department has found.

The findings of the survey, which tested water samples from six hundred locations spread across the Capital, are shocking.

Few of My Favorite Women:

History of "International Women’s Day"

The pages of history states that the first National Woman's Day was marked in the United States on Feb 28. It was the Socialist Party of America which had observed this day in honour of the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York, where women had raised their voice of protest against working conditions.

However, it was the Copenhagen initiative for which the International Women's Day was marked for the first time (19 March) in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

And finally March 8 was chosen globally to be observed as the Women's Day
